Growing up in a Wiltshire village, Will was exposed from an early age to his father’s deep love for blues and soul. “It was the only music played at home. And for a while I was a bit of a purist refusing to listen to anything recorded after the 1950s,” laughs Will. Having left school aged 16, Wilde moved to Brighton determined to make a living as a musician - even drummed in punk and goths bands to pay the rent - but stuck with feel and groove, and used his time to develop his singing, songwriting and harmonica playing skill.
“Harmonica is such a beautiful, expressive instrument, it can really sing soulfully’’. Will’s skill on the harp saw him nicknamed “Harmonica”, won him a nomination at the British Blues Awards for Best Harmonica Player in 2010, and brought bookings at clubs across the UK and Europe, as well as critical praise in the press and radio support from BBC Radio2 DJ Paul Jones.
Wilde used influences, inspirations and life experiences to create something new, challenging and personal, as this stunning debut album Unleashed demonstrates. ‘’On Unleashed, I was free to make the music I wanted to make, pushing boundaries, beyond the blues. I had been let of the leash!’’ he explains. To help deliver the Wilde sound, Will gathered an impressive array of musicians. ‘’I had jammed with these guys before. Jamie Little (producer) delivers a groove that fits my style, Stuart Dixon (guitar) has the ability to fit the song with his own identity - he is the best guitar player I have ever played with. Roger Innis (bass) plays with a lot of feeling and Pete Wingfield (piano and organ) brings an incredible soulfulness. And working with Mike Vernon - producer of the bonus track Blues Is My First Love - was a great honour. He is one of my idols!’’ concludes Will.
With these 12 self-penned new songs, Will Wilde shows that he is comfortable with creating music where the harmonica leads and expressing his feelings through words. Indeed, Unleashed is an album of depths and lyricism. The opening track, Angel Came Down is a soul tune, it's hard hitting, with a rocking harmonica solo. No No No is based on a traditional gospel song, ‘’like Ray Charles, I changed it from a song about God to one about a girl. It’s got a real Motown flavour to it”. Will approaches each song with utter conviction. Waste My Life Away is an uptempo soul blues about doing what you want to do with your life, ‘’I was bullied at school and ever since have been determined not to let people tell me what to do”. Malaria was written after a trip to Kenya, where teaching harmonica to school children in shanty towns was a life-changing experience. H.L.S. is a fiery protest song against animal testing. Unleashed also includes sexy soul stompers; and Wilde’s authentic, soulful voice and well-measured delivery is highly effective. ‘’Let’s Get High is a late night blues about having a good time and enjoying life. Pete plays a beautiful Memphis Slim-style piano solo on this tune. We cut this in one take!’’, while Wish You Were Mine could have been laid down in a Mississippi Malaco Studio.
One listen to Unleashed brings to mind comparisons with Paul Weller and Paul Rodgers, even Rod Stewart, at the start of their careers. And if Unleashed proves Will Wilde as a true contender - with no fear - in soul, blues, funk, and rock, it finds him looking forward, not backwards. “I love how Joss Stone and Amy Winehouse have taken soul to a new, young audience. That’s what I’d like to do, with added harmonica!”
